Portland Timbers Mid-Season report

With their 4-1 win over the California Victory on July 15, the Portland Timbers reached the midpoint of their 2007 season and find themselves surprisingly atop the USL First Division table, in a season when many predicted the offseason changes would result in another season at the bottom of the table, which is where the Timbers found themselves last year, tied for dead-last with the Minnesota Thunder.   continue....

He doth protest too much, methinks

Is it me or does there seem to be an inordinate amount of crybaby whiners getting carded for dissention nowadays when a referee whistles a foul? Now I'm not saying that a foul has actually been committed, given the trend du jour of gymnastic theatrics (and God knows the recent World Cup card tossing frenzy manifested a need for referee reorientation), but when the referee, serving as the absolute judicial authority for rules compliance inside the touch lines, blows his or her whistle it is a fait accompli.  continue....

I like Eric Wynalda…… Finally

It was in the middle to late 80's that I became aware of soccer's greater scope outside of my eight year old son's rec league environment when Coastal Carolina University, near Myrtle Beach, SC, opened its gates to league players and their parents for a pre-season match. I'm thinking hey, it's free, and I get to see soccer at a level beyond the 40-boots-churning-up-a-cloud-of-dust-in-a-ten-foot-circle that was the U-8 fracas loosely defined as youth soccer. I suspected that there was some part of this game that I had not yet experienced. By the end of the half I was totally smitten.  continue....

American Sports Fan's Guide to Watching The World Cup: Don't Bother.

Fans of American televised sports beware and be warned. There is mischief afoot in the hallowed halls of network sports television. The moguls at ABC Sports and ESPN/ESPN2 have conspired to subject your uninitiated and unsuspecting sports sensibilities with (wait for it…….) EVERY SINGLE MATCH OF THE 2006 FIFIA WORLD SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS, known everywhere else as The World Cup.  continue....

The Game Deserves Better

I love to watch soccer on TV. Instant replays, national and international updates and clever commercials at the half aside, I have the pleasure of throwing the little foot rest thingy up on the Lay-Z Boy and stretch out without decapitating anyone in front of me (unless I catch the cat unawares as she strolls by with that regal "can't touch this" attitude. Even a near miss is worth it).  continue....

Sunderland and Timbers fans unite to benefit the Keiana Serrill Trust Fund

In April 2006, 31 members of the Timbers Army went to England, having been invited by a Sunderland SAFC supporter, Gary Lamb, who had been impressed with the hospitality given to him and other Sunderland fans when they came to Portland to see their team play an exhibition game against the Portland Timbers, an entertaining 0-0 match in front of over 15,000 fans at Portland's PGE Park.   continue....

It Ain't Over Till After It's Over

It's been said that if you put 1000 chimpanzees in a room with 1000 typewriters (or in today's parlance, word processors) and gave them enough time one of them would write the Declaration of Independence or some such famous literary work (or perhaps a viable exit strategy from Iraq).  continue....

Hounds are eager to open!

On Wednesday (5-3), the Riverhounds F.C. held Media Day at Falconi Field. I arrived a little late, but when I arrived I found the team in their Red shirts and black shorts, in left field, formed in a circle and practicing with the ball. Head coach Gene Klein was standing nearby watching. He appeared to be the only coach around and there were very few other media around.  continue....

Kick-back. The players who stayed for Division 2

In spite of the 're-alignment' to division 2 this year, a number of players have stuck with the Richmond Kickers. Although the reasons are varied, the familiar faces will certainly be a welcoming in a season of change at UR stadium. Here is a rundown of the returnees:  continue....

Putting Together Dominoes?

Almost like clockwork, if it's the end of the USL season there has to be drama and this year it resides in Richmond, VA. The Kickers have made noises to the Richmond Times-Dispatch that a move down in divisions may be on the cards for the 2006 season in an effort to reduce costs to better spend the money in other areas of the club.  continue....

Montreal Impact vs. the Media friendly game

On Friday October 7th, to coincide with Quebec's physical fitness day, the Montreal Impact organized a friendly game against the members of the media to be played at the Catalogna Soccerplexe (training ground for the team). I had accepted the invitation to play several weeks ago never realizing how much fun this game would turn out to be. But I am getting ahead of myself.  continue....

Riverhounds finish tied for 6th

The hounds have had a disappointing year, finishing with a 6-10-2 record, tied with New Hampshire and Long Island for sixth, in the USLD2. The only team below us was the Northern Virginia Royals with only two wins, although they did show improvement near the end.  continue....

Going down

I admit that I've not covered the Riverhounds in a couple of games. I missed the Cincinnati game because of a commitment to cover the Sparks(now 5-1-1), which started at the same time. They won that game(2-0).

But the hounds have lost two straight at home, both 1-0 scores, to the Kings and Harrisburg the following weekend.  continue....

Riverhounds evaulation

Every fan has their own opinion of the hounds move to Falconi Field, but the bottom line is it is their new home.

Coming off their best-ever season, and first in the league known as the PSL last season, the hounds had high expectations going into this season, after their overall record of 19-3-1 and failing to make the final, losing to the now-defunct Utah Blitzz.  continue....

Riverhounds have a big week

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds began their week with a Press Conference at Falconi Field, which I attended. The facility is located within an hour South of Pittsburgh, just off exit 15 of I-70 in Washington, Pa.. Home of the Washington Wild Things minor league baseball team, Falconi Field had logos of their home tennant everywhere, except in the locker room, where pictures of the hounds hung on the walls.  continue....

Interview with Auggie

Coach Mike Anhaeuser has been with the Charleston Battery since 1994. First as a player, then as the Assistant Coach under two different coaches and now he takes the reigns as the Head Coach for the Battery. With the responsibility of putting the Battery back at the top of Division 1, Auggie, as he is know, is already a favorite with the fans and hopefully still will be at the end of the 2005 season.  continue....

Riverhounds Reflections

For Riverhounds fans, it has been disappointment from hope of a proposed new home that never materialized, since the site at Colliers Twp. was voted down by the residents.  continue....

Syracuse Salty Dogs hang it up

There will be no A-League soccer in Syracuse 2005; the Syracuse Salty Dogs have suspended operations. The team's owner, a partnership called Syracuse Pro Sports, announced on Oct. 27 that it would dissolve and forfeit its rights to an A-League franchise.  continue....

Wave United Notes

MILWAUKEE - At the midway point of their 28-game A-League schedule, the Milwaukee Wave United's 1-7-1 start is pretty much a distant memory these days.

And instead of trying to just win games, sitting at 5-7-2 for 17 points and seven points behind Seattle for fourth place in the Western Conference - and with four games in hand on the Sounders - Wave United can honestly start talking about a playoff chase.  continue....

The Rhinos Venture West

This all started on an outside concourse at Rochester's Frontier Field on July 11, 2003. Well, it probably didn't, but I'd like to think it did.

During my 2003 A-League trip up and down the east coast, I visited Rochester on that day, something I had wanted to do for several years. I wanted to see what the big deal was in Rochester, why they drew so many people to Frontier Field when so many A-League teams struggle with attendance, and to experience it all first-hand.  continue....

Milwaukee Wave United Notes - 6/14

MILWAUKEE - Sunday was a pretty good day for the Beasley family.

DaMarcus Beasley had two goals and was named the Man of the Match in the United States' 3-0 victory over Grenada Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, in the first game of a home-and-home World Cup qualifying series. Then Sunday night, older brother Jamar made his debut for the A-League's Milwaukee Wave United.  continue....

Bend it like Buddha

Soccer continues to become more popular. How do I know? Take a look at the movies that have been released in just the past few years that have a soccer theme. The Cup, Mean Machine, of course Bend it like Beckham. In fact, due to the popularity of that movie I expect to see even more soccer related films continue to be made and released.  continue....

Harrisburg City Islanders - A Future In The A-League ?

After making it to the A-League final in 2001, the Hershey Wildcats, folded without warning when the Hershey Corp. pulled the financial plug on the team. During that fall's USL Annual Operations Meeting, speculation was going hot and heavy that a group in Harrisburg might just step in to keep that franchise alive and the back and forth phone calls went right up until the last minute. The league could wait no longer without a solid commitment, and so professional soccer in that area of Pennsylvania came to and end, at least for the short term.  continue....

Milwaukee Wave United Opener Preview

Normally, Art Kramer loves to see green. As in the green grass of the soccer field.

But too often this week, the Milwaukee Wave United coach saw green and cringed. As in the green that indicates rain on the radar screen.  continue....

Milwaukee Wave United Opener Preview

Art Kramer spends an awful lot of time watching and thinking about soccer - not surprising, since that's his job as coach of the Milwaukee Wave United.

But Kramer is also a big sports fan. He's never at a loss to discuss the goings-on in leagues and competitions well beyond the one he is intimately involved in.  continue....

Southern Derby, Version 2K4

Happy birthday to you…..happy birthday to you….happy birthday Southern Derby….happy birthday to you!!

Atlanta's New Stadium Taking Shape

The last few years have seen a small boom in soccer-specific facilities in the United States, with new soccer stadiums popping up in Columbus, Ohio; Charleston, South Carolina, Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Carson, California; with stadiums in Rochester, New York; Frisco, Texas; and Bridgeview, Illinois scheduled to open in the next few years.

But late in 2003, the A-League's Atlanta Silverbacks also announced that they would be building a new soccer stadium, an announcement that caught the soccer community, and many Atlanta soccer fans, somewhat by surprise.   continue....

“The Minnesota Thunder 2004 Player Combine:  A Fan’s Perspective”

Well, the 2004 Minnesota Thunder Player Combine is history.  It will be a while (at least a season) before anyone will really know how successful it was in enhancing the team.  But, from a personal standpoint, there is no question that it enhanced this fan’s appreciation and understanding of the game we all love.  continue....

Conversations and Conversions

Walking into our favorite Italian restaurant my wife is forced to roll her eyes at me. At the next table a group of young men and women were discussing how the FA Cup is better than the Super Bowl. What was surprising to me was that the two voices of US origin were not only familiar with the FA Cup, but were able to compare the two with relative ease. I know better than to abandon my wife, a non-soccer fan, for a discussion about the beautiful game - no matter how much I wanted to.  continue....

Cascadia Cup Brewing Out West

Trying to get supporters of the Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps to agree on anything is like trying to convince Pele's mother that Maradona was the best soccer player ever! Well, almost. Things are likely changing just a bit in the cooperation department as the Cascadia Cup begins to brew for the three rivals.  continue....

Mustangs Gallop Into McMahon Stadium

Last week, the Calgary Mustangs finally announced their stadium plans for the upcoming A-League season.  The club made it official that they are moving into McMahon Stadium.  The Mustangs will join the Syracuse Salty Dogs as the only other A-League club to play on the old version of Astroturf.  continue....

"I just hope this isn't a decision that haunts me for the rest of my life" reflected Brian Ashton on the phone from his Sudbury home. "The opportunity was just too good to pass up though. Between Hell and Baton Rouge

Twenty games. A total of eight different cities in four different states, and an island that may one day become a state, or its own country. Come along for the Journey

As one often does this time of the year I took stock of 2003. Generally speaking it was not a good year, either for me personally or for my beloved Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Although the Hounds went on a winning streak late in the year that created a buzz throughout the USL community they failed to make the playoffs, and then announced to a depressed and saddened Pittsburgh that they would not return to the A-league next year.......  continue....

NASL lives on in 10 A-League cities

The numbers are quite staggering, actually. Of the 16 teams who will play in the A-League in 2004 a full 10 of them will do so in cities/areas that at one time were homes to NASL (North American Soccer League) clubs. Atlanta, Rochester, Toronto, Montreal, Minnesota, Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver were once home to the Apollos/Chiefs, Lancers, Metros/Blizzard, Manic, Kicks/Strikers, Drillers, Boomers, Sounders, Timbers and Whitecaps in another era, in another world, in a league far, far away. Or is it so far?......  continue....

A-League Seeing Double in Alberta, Canada

Toronto's Offensive Savior Finds New Home For Remainder Of Season in Montreal…but what does it mean for his former club?

Milling around outside the entrance to Frontier Field after the August 1st match between Rochester and Toronto, something occurred to me almost immediately: the team are such sticklers to get back on the bus and head home as quickly as possible, why is everyone just standing around?  continue....

8,237, the largest crowd in Montreal Impact history, turned out for the match versus the Toronto Lynx (also pretty good for a Wednesday game!). A-League Weekly Wrap Up - Week 13

This week started on a Tuesday again. The Charleston Battery and the Richmond Kickers played. These are the top two teams in the Southeast conference. The Battery dominated the first half and scored in the 11th minute after they intercepted a clearance and sent it back into Paul Conway who buried it in. The Battery had two other good chances in the first half. The Kickers almost tied it up when Jeffrey had a nice volley with a nicer save by Hudock.  continue....

Time is Crucial

A-League Weekly Wrap Up - Week 12

This A-League week started off with two games on Tuesday. The Portland Timbers traveled to Vancouver to face the Whitecaps. 2003 Preseason Interview with Coach Cowlishaw

It took no time at all for Coach Cowlishaw to name off the highlight of the season, it was September 21st at Frontier Field in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Final. After a tied first leg and two losses in the regular season against the reigning champions, the Kickers were certainly the underdogs in Rochester. But in a thrilling 17 goal shoot-out, an ironic contrast to the goal-less 120 minute game, goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale capitalized on Greg Simmonds' missed kick and sent the Kickers to the Championship in Milwaukee.....continue....
