WUSA All-Stars showcased in Portland
Another feature in the "Outside the A-League" series

The Women's United Soccer Association held their first ever All-Star game on Saturday in Portland, and Washington's Abby Wambach scored twice to earn the MVP trophy, and help lead the South to a 6-1 win over the North in a match played in front of 14,208 at Portland's PGE Park.

Early in the match, it was the South team that was applying the pressure, earning several corner kicks during the first 10 minutes, but were unable to put a good shot on net. Then in the 9th minute, a mis-hit on an attempted clearance by the North's Melissa Moore went right to North forward Abby Wambach, who played a soft pass back to a charging Mia Hamm, but Moore had recovered and blocked Hamm's shot.

Then in the 11th minute, on the first good scoring chance that the North had, they made it pay off when Tisha Venturini chipped a pass into the run of Marinette Pinchon, who controlled off her head, then turned on the shot and put it just inside the right post from 15 yards out to put the North up 1-0.

In the 15th minute, the South squad had another good chance to score when Hamm made a run down the left side, then cut back at the top of the box and hit a hard shot that went just a yard or so high. The North nearly doubled the lead in the 19th minute when a deflected attempt to clear was right into the run of Sissi, who had an open run to the net from the left side, but her powerful drive from 8 yards out was into the side netting.

But three minutes later, the South finally broke through when Hamm played a square pass to the top of the box to a charging Hege Riise, who hit a hard shot just under the bar to the left side, and the South had evened the score at 1-1. Just two minutes later, the South widened their lead when Shannon MacMillan had the ball deflect to her feet at the top of the box, and she played a soft diagonal pass to the left side to Wambach, whose low shot was deflected by a charging Moore, but it wasn't enough to keep the shot out of the net, and the South had a 2-1 lead.

Neither team seriously threatened again until the South's Charmaine Hooper made a perfect pass into the run of Homare Sawa down the left side, but she was unable to put the shot on net, with the shot going just wide left. In the 39th minute, the South widened their lead even more when Kylie Bivens' curling shot from 20 yards out curled enough to stay in bounds along the endline, and was collected by Hamm. Hamm played a cross back into the box, and Bivens was in position to get her head on the cross at the 6-yard box, and put the header just inside the left post to give the South a 3-1 halftime lead.

The North team carried some good possession early in the 2nd half, but were unable to put any shots on net. Play continued mostly in midfield until the 53rd minute when a pass from Hooper to MacMillan had the hometown favorite in alone, but she slightly scuffed her shot from the top of the box, and LaKeysia Beene was able to deflect the shot wide. But in the 60th minute a defensive breakdown for the North gave the South squad an easy goal when Hooper played a pass across the top of the box to a wide-open Wambach, who played an easy shot into a mostly open net, and the South had widened their lead to 4-1.

In the 64th minute, the North nearly pulled closer when a Maren Meinert chip into the box bounced near the stop and then Brandi Chastain went up for a header inside the 6-yard box, but South goalkeeper Brianna Scurry blocked the ball off Chastain's head, and collected the free ball to end the threat. One minute later, Pichon had another good shot on net for the North, but her shot towards the lower left corner was collected by a sprawling save by Scurry.

But two minutes later, the South was on the board again when Wambach flicked a pass into the run of Hooper, who was in one-on-one against Beene, and chipped the North goalkeeper from the top of the box, with Beene only getting a fingertip on the shot, but not enough to keep it out of the net and the South had a 5-1 lead. The South nearly scored again three minutes later when a mis-hit clearance by Beene instead hit off the leg of MacMillan and was heading towards the net but Beene managed to make a reaction save to keep the ball out of the net.

In the 69th minute, Sawa nearly widened the lead for the South even more when she hit a dipping full volley from 20 yards out that required a diving save to the left by Beene. In the 73rd minute, a cross from the right from Kate Sobrero into the box gave the North a good chance to score when Pichon hit a shot down into the NexTurf that nearly bounced over Scurry's head, but the South goalkeeper was able to barely tip the ball over the net. In the 75th minute, the North was threatening again when Chastain played a pass across to a charging Angela Hucles, who had a mostly open net to hit from just 6 yards out, but put the shot over the net.

But with about one minute left in this 80 minute exhibition, the South put one more goal into the net when MacMillan, a University of Portland graduate, took a pass from Hooper at the top of the box, angled off to the keeper's right, and hit a perfectly placed soft curling shot that hit off the right post and into the net for the final goal of the exhibition as the South won this first ever WUSA All-Star game by a 6-1 score.

For her two goals and one assist, Abby Wambach was named as the All-Star Game MVP.
