Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery has signed defender, Andrew Lewis for the upcoming 2002 A-League Season. Lewis is a five-year veteran of Major League Soccer and spent the last four seasons with the Chicago Fire. He has also played for the Metrostars and was a member of the U23 US Men's National Team.
Charleston Battery Head Coach, Chris Ramsey,
"Andrew Lewis is a solid addition to the squad, he's an experienced and very capable defender. I think last year we struggled a bit defensively. This year, with the quality of the players in the side, we are going to be much tighter. The team is really starting to take shape now, I can't wait for the season to begin."
A native of New Providence, NJ, Lewis was drafted in the ninth round (17th overall) of the 1997 MLS expansion draft by the Chicago Fire. Despite being picked by the Fire he spent his first professional season with the MetroStars. Lewis played in 19 games for the MetroStars in 1997, accumulating 1,421 minutes with 1 assist.
In 1998 he was traded to the Chicago Fire, where, over 4 years he played in 55 games, scoring twice and contributing 3 assists. He was a teammate of recent Charleston Battery signee, Eric Wynalda in 2001.
A three-year starter at Princeton (1993-1995), Lewis ended his collegiate career with 37 games played and 1 assist. He was a member of the Princeton team that advanced to the NCAA final four in 1993, and that also shared the Ivy League title with Columbia in the same year.
