August 5, 2003 (TORONTO, ON) – The Toronto Lynx are back in action at Centennial Park Stadium this Friday, August 8 when they take on the Vancouver Whitecaps in an all-Canadian battle at 7:30pm. The game will count toward the Voyageurs Cup, Canada’s unofficial championship. With the Lynx playoff hopes fading, this game is a must win in Toronto’s quest to capture some hardware this season. With a 3-1-0 record thus far in Voyageurs Cup play, including a 2-1 win in Vancouver on June 28, the Lynx are tied with the Montreal Impact atop the standings, with Vancouver (2-2-0) only one game off the pace and Calgary rounding out the field at 0-4-0. Lynx head coach, Peter Pinizzotto says, “We want to win the Voyageurs Cup and our fate is in our own hands with home games left against Vancouver and Calgary, who we have already beaten. However, this Friday’s game will be very difficult. Vancouver is good team and adding a player like Carlo Corazzin (since our last meeting) makes them even stronger.” Since joining the Whitecaps, Corazzin has contributed 5 goals and 10 points in only 10 games. The Whitecaps high-powered offense also features striker Jason Jordan, who is tied for the team lead with 9 goals and 6 assists and leads the team with 24 points in 21 games. Midfielder/Forward, Oliver Heald is also having an outstanding season with 9 goals and 3 assists, as is forward, Ive Sulentic who has 5 goals and 6 assists. The Lynx defense will be tested by this strong group of attackers and will again look to goalkeeper, Theo Zagar to hold the fort. The club is hosting its annual East Meets West Night honouring and showcasing the culture of the growing Asian communities in the GTA, with Korean percussion dancers, Dragon dancers, Kung Fu demonstrations and Celebrities from Fairchild Television.
LYNX SOCCER SPEED SHOT CHALLENGE AT TASTE OF DANFORTH
The Toronto Lynx are bringing the excitement of soccer to the 10th Annual Taste of the Danforth taking place this weekend, August 8th, 9th and 10th. The concept, initially modeled on the enormously successful Taste of Chicago, is a celebration of Hellenic cuisine and Hellenic culture. With well over 1 million people attending the annual event, the Taste of the Danforth has become one of Toronto's signature events, showcasing the best our multicultural city has to offer - from dim sum to mezes, from world folk music to children's games - but with a very special emphasis on the Hellenic food and culture that makes the Danforth a destination year round.
For the first time, the Toronto Lynx players and staff will be on hand on Saturday, August 9th from 12pm-10pm and on Sunday, August 10th from 12pm-8pm to partake in the festivities. With ticket giveaways and prizes, as well as the Lynx Speed Shot Challenge, where soccer fans can measure the strength of their shot against Lynx players, the Lynx will be bringing the world’s beautiful game to the Taste of the Danforth.
